2 Girls beats Tsubaki in bid to open Singapore’s first Meido Cafe

Those who hang around in the #animenano will have probably heard about my plans to open a Meido Cafe in Singapore together with tjhan. I also roped in a business marketer undergrad, and once tjhan graduates from his food and something course, we’ll roll in the ball.

We’ve been toying around with the idea, as well as the feasibility of this plans and it seems like someone has already beaten us to it.

meidocafesgeditor2.jpg

For some reason, I can’t seem to access to article featuring this, so what ever I know is based on this and this site’s take on the upcoming Meido Cafe set to open next month in Far East Plaza.

Before I start, I think I should clarify that I have nothing against them, and I’m not unhappy at all. I’m genuinely concern about their business structure and how they plan to run their ‘Coscafe’.

I personally feel that the two girls, Julia Laurant, 21 and Ferlyn Tan, 16 have not done sufficient research work on the market. It is great that they are bringing the classic Meido Café into Singapore, hell I’m enthralled by the idea but can it sustain itself?

Can it entirely survive on me, and the many other otaku’s weekly pocket allowance?

Based on my own research, Singapore’s market is not ready for the classic Meido Cafe business structure. Working on that alone would be extremely fatal

The number of otakus in Singapore is small, and the big spenders happen to sit on the top of the pyramid. Most of the people into anime and its culture are students who are not working, and do not have the luxury to spend top money just to spend time with the meidos.

As for the mass consumers, they’ll probably give this novelty a try, but what’s the drawing factor that’s going to pull them back again? Being able to take pictures with the meidos after your 12th visit only works for otakus.

The plan I have is slightly different, and the target group I’m wooing is the mass consumers. My idea is more of an infusion of Meido Cafes and Lifestyle Cafes like TCC, which are extremely popular with youth and working adults.

meidocafesgeditor1.jpg

The cafe will expand its services to include catering and a “Date with a Maid” feature, where patrons will have a maid dedicated to their service for the evening. This element is expected to be popular with those who want to treat their friends to a different experience, say, for their birthdays.

Does this sound like a Cabaret, anybody?

I actually think the ‘Date with a Maid’ feature is quite sleazy, and it might attract the wrong kind of customer. While the harmless, but deep-pocketed otaku is the kind you should be attracting, the lecherous old men from Geylang (Singapore’s Red Light District) will definitely come in and take advantage of this service.

According to Ms Laurent, the cafe will introduce the Japanese quality of service here, as the “maids” are required to be proficient in English, Chinese and Japanese as well as be sociable. Rather than the run-of-the-mill café culture, Cosafe will also deliver a different experience, promised Ms Laurant.

I think their recruiting requirements are a lot more stringent as compared to my plans. It’s hard to find Singaporeans who are effectively bilingual and are willing to wear a Meido costume and serve rather disgusting otaku customers. To find someone who’s trilingual… wow, that’s going to be quite a challenge.

Service is an important aspect in Meido cafe, and even service standards in high-end restaurants in Singapore can’t even beat the standards in Japan’s departmental stores. I don’t even want to start

And not to mention that their girls have got to be cute. In my experience with my Japanese language school, all the cute and hot girls taking Japanese are NOT interested in anime.

Instead, they lean towards the fashion and lifestyle aspect of Japan.

It is the run-in-the-mill-FYGs that are learning Japanese because they love the anime culture of Japan.

That’s why whenever our sensei ask why we are taking up Japanese, I never don’t scream “IT’S BECAUSE I LOVE ANIMESSS!!!11111ONONONE”

That’s just my two cents worth on this.

Whatever it is, I’m going to use them as a gauge on how receptive the local market is to the idea.

What’s worrying is this becomes a ‘Bubble-Tea’ boom that happened years ago, when everyone started opening ‘Bubble-Tea’ shops and closing a year later because of excess competition.

    You gotta be kidding me……..

  2. Mark |

    Well, that was informative~

Personally, I don’t really like real meido much (maybe not at all), I find them too far off from the real thing and it loses it’s appeal. It’s the same with real cosplay for me, I suppose.

When I have enough money and have learnt Japanese (to a fluent basic conversational level) and take a trip over there for a couple of weeks, it’s possible I may go in a meido cafe once, just to check it out but that will probably be all.

  3. umehiko |

I’m teaching myself Japanese, but I’m planning on taking up a proper course after the o levels :3

I want to go look at the meido~! XDD But I don’t think it would last very long. Unless it has very good food and gets featured on TV or something. It’s not really something I would frequent .__.

  4. tj han |

Daddy’s girls using parents money. And they are schooling too. Recipe for disaster.

And seriously, how many trilingual girls do you know? I know a handful and these are all either half-Japanese or elite students, none of whom will be a maid.

The worst thing they can do is to make the waitresses speak Japanese. Seriously, have you ever stepped into a Japanese resturant here and not cringe at their doomed attempts of “irasshaimase”? Hell, how many girls can speak proper English here? That already eliminates half the population.

    But let’s go there anyway.

  5. ethreal |

Haha, I was reading through the article while slacking off during lunch at work and was WTF when I came across it. I scanned it just in case:

A friend and I were talking about it and actually we were expecting their business to fail. (Or maybe because we don’t like this two girls after their Cosfest stint. If their names don’t ring a bell, these two are the attention-seeking, horrible Lacus and Luna cosplayers from Cosfest who won. >____>)

I know entrepreneurship is encouraged, but I honestly don’t think these girls are prepared for it, nor have done good research. And if I was fluent in English, Mandarin and Japanese I’d rather work as a translator and dress myself up as a maid and serve people. (Having been a sales promoter for six months, I’ve decided not to do customer service-related stuff for a long, long time :D)

  6. ethreal |

Woo I forgot the link to the article:

  8. hotchanbot |

wasnt ferlyn tan recently featured in an article about cosplayers in the straits times or newpaper?? yeah i remember her dressing up as gatekeeper fei… man… the hell with it… such a young entrepreneur… no need to study for o lvls??

  9. glazzal |

Wait, you’re afraid people will call you an FYG? How does that work? ^^

    I share Mark’s sentiments, above.

And dang, ethreal makes a very good point. They’d have to pay these girls a good sum. Well, with the crappy job market you never know….

  10. tsubaki |

@Silvercrimz Slap yourself, this is reality.

@Mark It’s true that nothing beats the perfect illustation of a 2D meido, as compared to a real girl. But in the end, you’re marrying a real person, and not a 2D girl. So it’s very much like em… getting used to the real stuff? I don’t know, lol.

@umehiko Would you work there after your o levels? Lol.

@tj han Whenever I enter Yoshinoya or Pepper Rice, their faux japanese greeting scares me. You’re absolutely right.

@ethreal Omfg, you’re a saviour. Your html noobness has forgiven. Thanks for the scan. And whoa whoa whoa, it’s those two girls from cosquest, lol of all people. And you pretty much hit the nail on the workers part.

@hotchanbot I don’t read the gossip/life section of the local papers these days. I just go straight to Home and World, where i chuckle at all the propaganda.

@glazzal Aikes, I didn’t make that line clear. Well basically, I just don’t want to be associated with them.

  11. Sora |

    Holy fucking shit.
    Lol..

  12. umehiko |

Nah, I don’t have the meido flair. I have the gariben/otaku look. Maybe I can be part of the kitchen staff :3

(then I can gawk at meido and goth lolis everyday XDD)

  13. sam56240 |

If the target audience is the 20s to early 30s, the waitresses would have to be slightly younger than that age. It takes some guts to step in to an establishment with frilly lace everywhere and to look at the waitresses.

Strange that cosplay cafe owners in Japan would readily share useful tips with others when the competition there is so high there.

If it’s SG$80k is on the line, i’m quite sure they would have done the research. I look forward to a success, if not, there’s going to be quite some backlash.

  14. elohir |

ZOMG…this is a recipe for fail..

  15. ethreal |

Been a long time stalker, but way to screw up on my first time commenting. I also mean to say “I’d rather work as a translator THAN _____” not “and”. F-fail.

As for my HTML noobness, I have a document of HTML stuff. I don’t even know how to link. Go me!

  16. sinistral |

Someone could just suggest to Starbucks to make their female waitresses wear like gothic lolita, change their greetings to “Welcome, my master” and it would work as well.

  17. spiderpig |

zomg. Even a SAP-er like me isn’t totally proficient in two languages, let alone in three. (Argh, I should have never taken a hiatus from Bunka. Stupid A Levels :\)

Seriously though, I cringe at the idea of a Meido Cafe in Singapore. For many reasons other than all the potentially suitable candidates for meidos would be, as many of the previous comments have stated above, wouldn’t bother to dress up as a maid and possibly get felt up by the 20-30 year old target clientele.

@tjhan LOL, with her parents willing to fork out nearly $90,000 I don’t think failing her O Levels would be a problem.

  18. Eugenics |

far east plaza.. its pretty far from the anime hub of sg, they should have gone and set it up at far east square, least thats next to china square. cant imagine the hourly pay for a triligual cute looking girl that’d offer good service though all we can do it wish them luck.

  19. tsubaki |

    @Sora Say it. I know you’re jealous.

@umehiko You look hardly like one. There’s only that air of BL yaoi fangirl air around you. At least you’re not FYG. Lol. And aye, I’d work for them as their kitchen staff.

@sam56240 $5 bet that there’ll be more 40 year olds than 20 and 30 year olds combined. And you’re quite spot on the situation of meido cafe in japan. Makes me wonder what did they do to get those tips.

@elohir How so? Hit me with more points like the rest, so I can probably tabulate everyone comments into another post or not.

@ethreal Haha, welcome then. Post more often. More comments = more motivation. And don’t worry too much about the mistakes, it’s a license to spell badly on the interweb. lol.

@sinistral That’s exactly my plan. Lol.

@spiderpig ZOMG. Since when were you from Bunka? Saaameee. Who was your sensei? Maybe start picking it up again, and you can work at that cafe in no time. Hah.

@Eugenics If I were them, I would have opened it in Sunshine Plaza. Since it was destined to die anyway, might as well go all out for the otaku market. I don’t know who’s going to pick up that job as a part time job, let alone as a full time job.

  20. spiderpig |

HAHA. I’m the stereotypical FYG actually, minus the yaoi part. So actually I can go work there and RUIN THE PLACE! LOL. I had Yoshioka-sensei for Elementary (she left the school D: ) and Maeda Asako-sensei for intermediate. Maeda-sensei would make a lovely meido. >D

  23. Maid Cafe in Singapore? The mere idea of it is… … … … … … …imposhibibibibibibibibible! « orz - SWISS CHEESE PORN |

[...] Well, I’ll leave the feasabilities of such a venture to the other anibloggers (Yes, they use delicious Shion as pics, but tsubaki used a moe loli meido, so he’s forgiven, even though he deserves to have his Poland invaded by cute penguin plushies :V) but, seriously, with the cosplay community playing out like the Senate in America, can they actually pull it off without the cosplay community slandering them?(And believe me, they will. It’s the same community who tried to copyright cosplay :V) I mean, ‘Date a Maid’ service? Aren’t you trying a LITTLE too hard to get repeat customers? [...]

  24. H2 |

Not pouring cold bucket but I think its gonna be hard to even break even. Singapore is just not ready for this kinda service. The market isnt there and as you guys already mentioned, the girls itself. Trilingual, moe and willing to dress up as maid AND that cabaret service? Holy fuck lol.

Lastly, after watching so much anime I think I would find it weird when a non japanese meido speaking japanese in this kinda cafe. They just dont have the accent that the Japanese have and that spoils the whole experience imo. Just like how it is a bit weird hearing the japanese speaking english although we understand what they mean.

  25. Sasa |

Harr harr… well, at least they appearingly are popular and do know about cosplay itself *haha*

Trilingual and meido? Forget it *g* (It’s not the problem with being trilingual… in fact, none of my closer friends are not trilingual, but rather the combination trilingual + moe + female.)

PS. I think the third/last picture of this post is totally hawt.

  26. air! |

I like how you compared it to the Bubble Tea phenomenon, that’s currently happening in the U.S. :p

  27. sakura-no-kage |

oo you know the news of the new maid cafe already lol.

will they want male maids too?? haha xD

lastly, i’m curious what do you tell your sensei the reason you took up japanese (instead of “i love anime!!!!”)

  28. abao |

Wish em good luck in trying to earn money out of an otaku+hikki.

  29. elohir |

@Tsubaki How it will fail? Right now the market isn’t in the favour of such stuff. Being a singaporean myself, people wouldn’t want to pay extra for a cup of kopi-o if I hafta pay like $10 bucks more than usual. I would go once just for the experience but unless there’s some X factor that will make people return, its going down imo.

  30. tsubaki |

@spiderpig Ah. I’m currently having Ando sensei for E1. Don’t know about those two sensei you mentioned, but Maeda-sensei sounds like the class I should be in! Lol.

    @drm WEHERE WEHERE?

@H2 Well don’t worry, nobody seems to be supporting it even though everyone quite hyped by it.

@Sasa Plus there’s no such thing as a SMART AND HOT BABE! Lol

@air! Really? The Bubble Tea war was insane years ago. Prices kept in slashing and in the end everyone got burnt out. Only a few survive today.

@sakura-no-kage I told him it’s because I want to work in Japan. Which is true, since I’m planing to work in their film industry.

@abao I don’t think I’ll upload my figurine money into their cafe, unless Hirano Aya’s working there.

@elohir But people are willing to pay top price for coffee and TCC and Starbucks!

  31. AeroFlare |

There should not be any “bubble-tea” boom in this meido cafe business…

As far as I could remember, the “bubble-tea” boom was caused by the followings:.
    . The hype from Taiwan
    . Supply

  32. AeroFlare |

    oops… i forgot that the textbox doesn’t convert the “smaller-than” sign to & lt;

    here’s what i wanted to say… originally

“There should not be any “bubble-tea” boom in this meido cafe business…

As far as I could remember, the “bubble-tea” boom was caused by the followings:-
    - The hype from Taiwan
    - Supply more than demand
    - Medium to high profit margin

And then the copycats came in and the rest is history…”

  33. AeroFlare the Blur |

gah!!!! sorry !!! should be “Supply less than demand”

  34. spiderpig |

@tsubaki And! It’s okay to mention that you’re learning Japanese for the sake of anime/manga because lol she watches gasp! Naruto and a few other series. Sadly, she’s already attached (TO A SINGAPOREAN MAN!!!! O_O) so I guess she’ll only play meido to him. ;__; You’ll probably get her when you go to Intermediate 1-4, hopefully!

  35. Kyon |

Wow,i actually had business plans and partnership plans with my closest 2 friends to setup a 1st maid cafe too…sigh…seems they beat us to it…i had loads of idea that will allow the cafe to thrive not mainly on the maid factor alone, and also many themes and stuff….well…too bad for me

  36. TP |

To go tangent here, I was probably wanting to study in Japan to learn how they make those damn phones so user-friendly. (Supposedly I graduated with a Diploma with Specialization in Mobile Computing.)

That said, while I might suggest that Singapore’s economy is going the way of Japan (sooner or later a huge bust is going to happen, just like Japan), the social sphere/mentality in Singapore is the same as any 3rd world country.

I say, “Good luck, girls.” ‘Cos, barring an appeal for having a foreign-sounding name and big capital, I don’t even bother doing business in Singapore.

If we move it to Malaysia, on the other hand… Sorry, The Phillipines are much more favourable to introduce maid cafes, given their strong affinity to anime and Japan in general.

OK, my 2 cents worth. Now flame me.

  37. spiderpig |

@Kyon Well, actually not too bad for you guys. All you potential meido-cafe owners can learn from the first cafe’s mistakes. :x

  38. yetpheng |

hmmm….i prefer that they recuit some males and do cosplaying like DEATH NOTE,inuyasha, etc not totally maids…..i am a singaporean girl…although i like anime,NO WAY I AM GOING TO WEAR THAT!!!! and i bet MOST of the girls in singapore agrees with me.

  39. tsubaki |

@AeroFlare I won’t want to comment much about it since one of my mom’s friend was conned into opening a bubble tea franchise.

@spiderpig zomg. Okay, I must pray hard to enter her class. Because my current sensei doesn’t like anime or manga, so I don’t tend to show it.

@Kyon It’s okay. Let them test the water for you. I’m watching how long they can last and if the market is open to the concept, then I’m pushing my proposal in full force.

@TP I think the reason why is because the mobile phone makers and the service providers work hand in hand together to provide a complete environment for its users. Unlike Singapore, where the phones are made first, then the service providers tell us that only a couple of phones works with their special service.

@yetpheng Oh noes. Not a yaoi cafe! Lol, well to be honest I know friends who like the idea of cosplaying and waitressing as a meido. It’s just that they’ll probably draw the line at the special service part.

  40. Sora |

    What if i am ? >(
    Boo. lol.

  41. sky9r |

Bubble tea worked in Singapore because the market segments of Taiwan is pretty similar to Singapore, hence identical marketing plans could be re-used for the Singaporean market. Furthermore, there were extremely low barriers to entry, since all you required was the machine which cost less than $5,000 and you didn’t require a full frontal shop front.

Meido cafes won’t work in Singapore due to the fact that the sg culture is still one of cynicism and frankly, as everyone should know, how many otakus are there in Singapore? Good luck attracting that market segment. It’s too small a niche market to be profitable.

Anyway, hopefully those 2 will improve upon their business plans. I for one would really like to see such ideas thrive in conservative ol’ sg. Though I wonder how they would obtain a licence for their cafe in the first place.

  42. Mark |

    >>But in the end, you’re marrying a real person, and not a 2D girl.

LOL, yeah. But I prefer real girls in normal clothes. ;P

I don’t think I’d mind them wearing cute nekomimi though, but that’s the most as far as cosplay is concerned. ^^

  43. tsubaki |

@Sora It’s about time you start saving up to migrate here.

@sky9r Ah yes, the truth essense of singaporeans- Cynicism. So true, so true. And yet it’s this thinking that makes everyone want to go give that meido cafe a try. But how many would return?

@Mark GASP BUT THIS IS TEH MEIDO UNIFORM! ARE YOU SURE111!!!11ONEONE

  44. sky9r |

Lol. I won’t deny the fact the everyone will want to go give that meido cafe a try, but how many will REALLY dare to step in?

We have long since been a civilisation of conservatism and just because of this, not many of those who WANT will ACTUALLY go. I foresee alot of ppl actually stalking the streets outside, trying to get a better view of what is inside, but when asked to go in, will respond with the typical “Don’t want lah. So lame.”

TCC and Starbucks made you look hip. It’s fashionable holding a TCC and Starbucks coffee cup and it ups your status just to be seen at one of these locations, but I don’t see how going to a meido cafe in Singapore can do your image any good.

Still, I do wish those girls enjoy short term success and know when to pull out when the novelty dies out.

  45. bj0rN |

well all these speculations and none confirmed, i wonder if they are even ready to open the cafe. who knows? they might just close it down even before it can start due to lack of staffs or something.

  46. sam56240 |

$5 bet? You’re on. (Not counting the people behind doing the cooking), my estimate is 70 yours- 30mine. 40 year old is too far off, if beer companies can find pole-dancers, i think 30 year olds are the mode (which still is not much too see). One day we’ll go there and ask all of them their ages. haha.

  47. elohir |

@tsubaki Well thats cuz its nice! If the meido food is up to par, it should cost more than your TCC and starbucks. But hopefully not as much as those high class restraunts. But I hope i don’t have to pay extra just for some girl in meido garb saying “welcome home master’”

  48. somatic |

“Service is an important aspect in Meido cafe, and even service standards in high-end restaurants in Singapore can’t even beat the standards in Japan’s departmental stores. I don’t even want to start ”

This is enought to kick the idea off the shelf. Personally i know that for sure that there are very less singaporeans that are able to service people. Not to mention people who are trilingual. The fact that you bring out the bubble tea craz. I am really afrid that parents will think that anime are something not decent and ended up causing anime to have a very negative image localy.

  49. LianYL |

Loli Meido Café will work on me.

According to Kwok, even in Japan, the “quality” of meidos are bad. Plain fucking ugliness. I don’t know how it’s going to succeed in Singapore. And “date-a-maid” sounds really bad, a fine line away from PRs.

As for shit attempts to pronounce Japanese in restaurants, you can experience the hell in Kuishinbo at Suntec City. Apparently they use some weird language there which is supposedly Japanese.

  50. toorigakari no hito |

@somatic:”Personally i know that for sure that there are very less singaporeans that are able to service people”—no way..I think you don’t quite understand what is the connontation of “service someone”. It means like prostitution or something close to that..xD….be careful what you say. I think you mean “Personally, i know that for sure that there are very FEW singaporeans that are able to SERVE people well.”. Your earlier sentence sounds like you personally know that the number of prostitutes is declining”…it sounds as if you personally know them… I am sorry if you take offense to this but it really sounds that way.

As for me, I feel that I could bear with and forgive the meido in this “cosafe” if they have a bad Japanese accent or not even be able to speak Japanese or Chinese. Yeah, “eigo” is good enough. I also think that even if they are not physically attractive, it is still bearable. This is not to say I can stand being served by someone who looks like a dessicated piece of cow dung, but average looks are fine too. I mean, how much can you expect from the typical S’porean girl? I guess that the workers in onesuch cafe would have to be , to a certain extent, adventurous and, dare I say, voyeurist? My point is that the service staff, meido or otherwise, must be willing to strike away from convention and be open-minded enough to defy the standard.

The key ingredient that I would require for the meido cafe/cosafe to be considered “good” would be service. In Singapore, “good” service is relatively uncommon(relative to other countries). If this cafe can set a new standard in service, I would definitely support it all the way. As for the supposed shady happenings that may happen in the “date with a maid” service, could we not look at the brighter side of human nature for once? I am not trying to say all customers of onesuch cafe would have the state of mind not to get “ideas” with the service staff/meido, but rather, let us not dwell in negativity. Measures can be taken. Preventive measures can be formulated and implemented.

That being said, all the best to these revolutionists and trend-setters!

  51. somatic |

Thanks for pointing that out, i knew something was wrong when i broke 2 tea cup at my workplace 2day. Rolf

  52. Ronin |

Tsk, tak, diving into such a dangerous occupation as such a young age. And with a twist of attracting smelly old men. Such a sad fate for these girls.

    MAKE MORE HONEST LIVING!!! \(>o

  53. Ninghua |

As a Malaysian across the South China Sea (YES! We exist!), I’d say give these girls a chance lah. You singaporeans are capable of doing things we malaysians cant do. For one, this is just one more reason why Tiger Airways should fly to Kuching….

  54. tsubaki |

It’s not about giving people a chance, it’s just that they have $80k in the coffers, and they are going to blow it away by having such ill-concieved ideas. Starting a business in Singapore is difficult and expensive, especially when the market is fickle.

I suppose you’re a malaysian chinese right? Most of my guildmates are malaysian chinese, and they always complain about getting shafted by the government. I feel for ya.

  55. Julia Laurant |

Hi there…and thanks for your patronism ^^

Yes I did understand the fact that the market here isnt exactly ready but hey..after it has been going on for sometime now…seems like its going ok..

Its not my money. Julia didnt put in a single cent. *waves*

If you want to talk about Daddy’s money..then I only have one words to put in for you. GET OVER IT.
There are people like Paris Hilton who do naught but just spend their father’s money…isnt that like WORSE?
Dont use other’s privileged birth as an excuse to insult..its their birthright. Goes to show nothing but jealousy coming from you.

I am from a not-so-well-to-do background, so I only contributed my 2cents worth of skills and designing as much as I am allowed to (since money isnt mine, I cannot have a say..) Which is also the major reason why the maid cafe didn’t turn out the way it was originally supposed to, and as we have agreed on. I don’t blame anyone but myself for being powerless (in a way pennyless hhahaha) in this matter. All I can do is buck up, and do it myself again and do it better next time.

1.5 years and the name “Cosafe” is still around. ^_~
The real business isnt just a cafe alone… Maid Cafe business isnt just an F&B or Otaku business…there is more to it that I suggest YOU research on.

Hope this bunch of information helps ^^ And thank you once again for your patronism.

  56. Julia Laurant |

Opps! Typo Error: WORD not words ^_~

Why get so hard up for beating you guys to your idea, Tsubaki-san? O_o
You can open your maid cafe too!

Please do! i urge you to do so…then at least it will give Floyd a big WHAT FOR in the face and make his lazy ass buck up.

And also it will help the Anime business scene here in Singapore ^^!!!!
Which is our main aim actually ^O^ ho ho ho
More maid cafes = more attention = more curiousity = more people.
Let the cute anime be our catalyst and you will see our otaku numbers growing soon. ^^ Its growing now isnt it?

If you wanted to know why we opened it so fast was because of the flow of social impact I just explained above. Cafe business is small, but its just step 1 to the bigger picture! ^_~
