Sharing the anime blogging experience: How ADD was born
Posted by tsubaki | Filed under Editorial, Personal

The recent wakeup call for more editorials by cordy isn’t the first.
Long before this, bloggers were whipped into shaped by a such similar calling. But lately with the influx of new bloggers, most of these new bloggers don’t know about that call, thus repeating the cycle again.
However, I’m not going to be talking about whether everyone should start churning out editorials or not.
I thought perhaps it would be better that share my personal experience as to why I started blogging and also comment a little about the current anime blogging scene. Do keep in mind that I’m not as seasoned as the older blogs around. I’m somewhere in the middle, but my understanding of the scene goes way beyond the birth of Anime Desho Desho.

ADD is powered by Inukamis
I could say that Anime Desho Desho started when I decided to move away from my anime blog I had on livejournal. Back then, I started out like what everyone does- Episode blogging and screen captures. It was during semester break, so I had plenty of time and I watched about 7-8 episodes of different animes a day, and every time I finish watching it, I blogged about them.
So technically you could say that I churned out an entry every hour. 24 minutes goes into watching it, and 30 minutes to do screen captures and a review.
That when on for about 3 months, and I got totally burnt out. Watching animes became a chore, and if I didn’t feel like writing, I wouldn’t watch any anime.
Of course that was stupid, but it was sort of like a goal back than.
So later I decided to move to wordpress, where I told myself that I should start writing more editorials and do lesser episode recaps. Anime Desho Desho was then born on wordpress.com. During my brief stay in wordpress, I began looking for my niche and style that would eventually shape the way ADD is now.
I did a couple of editorials, episode reviews, dabbled a little of figurines shooting (which sucked by the way) and posted random stuff.

Anime Desho Desho’s 1st banner
June 23rd 2006, I moved to the animeblogger.net network, courtesy of Maestro the father of ab.net. During this time, Anime Desho Desho grew in the number of readers after I added it to ab.net antenna and the new (back then) Anime Nano that Hung started.
I didn’t bother to try getting my blog on blogsuki though. I never liked that aggregator to honestly, and it was felt more like Jason miao’s personal rss blogroll than an aggregator. Plus I was new, so meh.
This was also around the period when the call for more editorials came. If I remembered correctly, it caused quite a huge uproar and everyone started talking about it. Those who were around would also remember Jason miao’s call for more graphs in blogs and his complaint about so many blogs blogging about the same Suzumiya Haruhi episode.
Drmchrso followed shortly with a flaming entry filled with graphs and it was completely hilarious. Ah, the good oh Angry DRM days. I swear that bastard’s dead now.
Anyway, through out my blogging journey I continued searching for my style, the style that simply spells tsubaki all over. But I’m sad to say that till now, I have yet to find that unique style. Anime Desho Desho is just too diverse. I blogged about anything and everything. There are news, editorials, reviews, random, fandom, figurine photography, etc etc.
However there’s a particular pattern that I noticed myself using-
My entries were kept simple and easy to read, and had a lot of personality injected into them and I avoided walls of words by dividing them nicely with pictures. It’s hard to find an entry here without pictures in it unless it is a short and quick entry I want to make.
Another thing that I try to do is to reply to everyone’s comments. To me, comments are like encouragements. If a reader takes up a couple of minutes of his life to read, and then write something, I should do the same.

Hotel Moscow supports comments, that are favorable to them of course
So I guess because of that belief I have, I found myself a lot of returning readers.
To be exact, 59.73% of Anime Desho Desho visitors are returning readers. 40.27% is made out of new visitors. Now I didn’t pull this numbers from my ass. It’s all stated on Google Analytics, my blog stats tracker.
60% of this readers return on a regular basis to comment, share and talk to me about my entries. And that was initially my reason why I started out anime blogging-
To look for more like-minded anime fans to talk to!
It’s unfortunate that my circle of friends in realities don’t like animes as much as I do, and thus it’s hard for me sometimes to discuss with them to death about why Eda is such a hot babe and Mizuho’s just a girl no matter how much the truth is prevalent in front of my eyes.
So ultimately for me, the ultimate blogging experience is to enjoy yourself by writing what you like and to interact with your readers and fans. To hear people agreeing or disagreeing (politely of course) makes it all worthwhile to spend time off your life to write.
And so, I end this little short experience of mine. I think it would be nice for the older blogs to share their experiences as well, which will benefit the newer bloggers.
After all, this is a community that we should foster up, and sharing such experiences always helps.

Nice post Tsubaki. And Mizuho is just like Bridget, you can choose her gender depending of what you like more.
You still have us online buddies to share your anime sentiments :P
Thanks for sharing your experiences – you were around longer than I was, that’s for sure. :)
I like how you try to respond to everyone.
I also like how you respond, even though I dont make much comments :P

>> …Watching animes became a chore…
That’s the state I’m in right now… but what kept me from updating is those commies’ law of not allowing access to blogspot, wordpress etc. (strangely enough, I can still access my old livejournal account…)
I like how your entries welcoming comments in general, that’s why I’m always back to see if I could comment on any of your entries.
Ha! I comment only because there’s a monthly top commenter!

Tsubaki does a good job responding to everyone. In fact, I don’t think anyone else does that and that’s your style, albeit a gay one.
Anyway, time flies eh? It’s been more than six months since that flame war.
heh, great post. interesting read
i possess neither the intelligence nor articulation required to post like this. hence, my blog is 100% superficial, filled with orgy pics and random comments -_-
@wazzup You’re welcome. You’re a new face here eh? Haven see you around.
@Deathy Thank you. I blame Mizuho’s attractiveness on Horie Yui. If they’ve gotten another seiyuu, perhaps nobody would love him/her as much.
@SilverCrimz What you? You only watch loli-related animes! LOL.
@Micheal You should share yours too. =)
@super rats And I like your pictures. HAH.
@boneheadjoe I’ve no RL friends who watch anime as much as I do. Maybe there’s 1, but he’s currently in China (Lol at AeroFlare). But running ADD has allowed me to meet some online peeps in reality so I suddenly find myself with a circle of new friends who enjoy animes as well.
@Chicken Thank you.
@AeroFlare China blocks all of those site? Gheeey. Just watch your anime and type on words of something, when you return you can vomit them back.
@sinistral That’s right.. I never noticed that as well. I’m always inviting comments. Thanks for pointing that out =D
@TedFox Hahaha, that top commentor thing does help in a way too eh? >D
@madman Heh, thank you. I hope yours grow as well. You’ve got quite a bit of potential. Damn long and detailed entries (2 only though, lol) that you have.
@moop T.T I’m not a girl. >.>
@elohir Some of them are my net buddies, so ignore them. Those commentwhores. LOL.
@tj han Lol fuck you. Aye, we need more flame war from him. How bout you start beating the corpse out of your FYG war? Might squeeze some remaining dorama.
@Zanza Thank you, and do note that I don’t write like this very often. My entries are often short, lack of intelligence and the lack of articulation with orgy of pictures and random comments too. Heh.
I thank you for sharing your blogging experience with us like-minded anime fans of the Pacific. So you’re new, too huh? glad to know. :)
@Ronin I’m not sure how long it takes before you get considered as “old”, but I’ve been blogging for a year now. ADD’s my 3rd blog. =D

[...] As many bloggers (two more) in the anime blogging sphere have mentioned, a lot of guys have just been doing episode recaps, summaries, and/or reviews of an episode or entire series — including me. [...]
This sort of makes me wonder why am I blogging? Oh that’s right, it’s so I can vent out all my frustrations into words. You know, since hitting everyone in the face isn’t socially acceptable as of yet.
Hahaha, you sound like you started off blogging because no one would talk to you about it…
Then again…that’s true for me too…sad…
