It's raining seifuku in ADD~

MAY

I told you so.

Posted by tsubaki | Filed under Personal

I woke up today and found my level 74 characters dead on the floor. It was a very omnious sign. I immediately fired up my firefox and dive back into anime community and the latest news on Riuva and DarkMirage confirmed what I was trying to warn everyone a week ago.

The official ODEX YOU-IS-TEH-PWNED letter is finally floating around the blogsphere.

Well people, I hate to say this, but I TOLD YOU SO. I told a couple of friends and they said I was being paranoid. Hur Hur hur. There’s going to be more letters coming out soon. You have no privacy. This is Singapore, not America. Your fucking votes aren’t even confidential to begin with.

I’ve stopped even trying to obtain animes from other methods. My complete starvation of anime is painful. I’ve been reduced to simply just rewatching older titles (just finished rewatching FMP, which I have the shitty Odex VCD btw) to curb my addiction. It’s painful, but I suppose we don’t have a choice.

Well I guess, back to Granado Espada eh?

How about you get some FFT and we can play PVP? Bastard.

  2. holybell84 |

Sian…. I just started on Granado…..and shit happens

  3. tsubaki |

@tj han I’m waiting for the english verion. Can’t wait to lick your dead body.

  4. sinistral |

Imma casting a new spell in GE call Shitstorm. It deals 10,000% damage per character on a approximately 50km2 radius. And I did it for the lulz.

Just kidding, but shit sucks though.

  5. Kouji |

5 years down the road, when ODEX board of directors start selling their shares for a sh!t price of S$0.01 a piece, they’ll look back on their life and go “Oh hell. Where did we go wrong?!”.

  6. Silverwolf X |

I’m migrating once I get enough money to rent an apartment. I’m not gonna do reservist for this shit. As a student in the arts sector, I CANNOT stand censorship. Half the Anime I watch will be edited, censored or heck, banned for release.

Right now I’m resorting to R1 and R2 dvds, but NS life gives me enough money to lick my *censored*.

ODEX claims to have improved, their last few releases so far have made me puked. Horrible subtitling, crappy encoding, inaccurate translations, and no bother in even karaokeing the opening/endings.

I’d rather move to the America or Japan. Sure, the chances of getting killed by a gun totting lunatic is higher in the states, but its alot better then living in a 2nd North Korea. I’d prolly have to put up with higher expenses in japan too, but at least the selection there is better and more ‘open’ then our budding North Korea V2.

Next they’ll ban taiwanese manga, then Japanese import manga and magazines, then they’ll not allow Japanese anime/game cg/illustration books, maybe kinokuniya can close all its branches.

I hope the ice caps melt soon, then all ships will use the shorter northern sea route and Singapore can be reduced to its isolated control hell.

  7. omgbbq |

u may have a chance to find your very own copy of that letter. check your mailbox now :-O

  8. Anon |

I’d like them to track what I watch on youtube. ^_^

  9. JS |

Makes me want to migrate to Japan when I reach adult age. -_-

  10. Kouji |

50 thousand to migrate for X number of years. Damn government…

  11. AnimeFanChris |

Go watch anime on youtube please don’t starve yourself even if its bad quality. I got another anime watching site that has really good quality here: http://www.animeepisodes.net/

Since you won’t be downloading anime and just watching it on a site I don’t see any way possible you could get in trouble this way.

  12. Mitsuki_Hayase |

I’d like them to track what I wank to.

    On mytube.

  13. tiny Red Man |

you sounded quite happy when you write this post. lol..anw..i tink not downloading anime should be easy once you have gotten use to it. T.T

  14. tueac |

Err i feel sorry for your situation… but…

Since when did odex release FMP? i tot that is by that other company…, sorry forgotten the name…

Anyway, there are still good alternatives like err… errr…. DVDs?

  15. Ferolare |

FMP? Thought you lost that years ago?

  16. Sagitis |

well if people want to move they can try the crappy australia. Life is a bit boring but the governemnt don’t care shit about the anime privacy. Becasue it is not even popular here to the major piublic

  17. wackedfoo |

i guess stockpiling fansubbed anime isn’t such a bad idea after all. i’m ready if anything like this ever happens. still, i can’t imagine not being able to watch anything during one of the best anime seasons ever. godspeed.

  18. elohir |

umm…play starcraft? hehe. Can’t play GE unfortunately. Internet’s too slow. Pc doesn’t support the 1GHz processing power needed or the 1GB of ram needed. Awell..

  19. Model_X |

I’ll give it a couple of mths before people start downloading again. Old habits die hard.

  20. Zer0 |

    Go Underground

  21. seorang |

    @Sagitis

In Australia, the controls are somewhere else. Considering the crappy bandwidth caps, the only way you’d actually get a plan close to Singapore standards in terms of speed (assuming 10Mbps/1Mbps) and unlimited bandwidth is by paying close to USD$250 monthly.

All plans in australia have one of either low bandwith caps, low speed, or massively high price.

I’d still rather be in Australia than Singapore, but Australia is not exactly some anime downloading heaven.

  22. holybell84 |

winny? Be careful of the Kanon virus.

  23. DrmChsr0 |

Tsubaki: BLUE MAX. And the subs aren’t THAT bad… At least they’re grammatically accurate.

Also, since when did ODEX have any rights to pull out Singtel’s bandwidth logs? Just asking.

Destestable as ODEX’s actions are, they are a company, and they need to make money.

Though resorting to RIAA tactics is quite detestable indeed. Enough to actually make me consider weapons-smuggling for a bit.

  24. anon |

Lol, Mitsuki you better be careful about downloading pr0n. Pr0n companies sued people some years back.

I still don’t see why you guys have to download stuff. If it’s quality you’re after, you’re really better off buying the original DVDs.

  25. Danny Choo |

Are those letters actually being received or just a ply to stop people from watching Haruka and her cute ribbons?

  26. Kip |

I guess watch the news and see if anything actually comes of this. Any arrests and legal action taken yet?

I wonder what would happen if the videos were named something like, “Employee_Training.avi”, or “Bootleg_episode_Sesame_Street.mkv”, anything not specifically related it anime, if that would draw any attention.

Man, I really wish I could send you a thumb drive of all of the anime you want from my computer each week. XP
    No fun.

  27. Kouji |

    @Danny;
Oh god i hope not. I wouldn’t know what i’ll do without my Baka Ribbon >_>

  28. ELFH |

okok….rite now they are gonna fine us 20K and 6 months behind bars for downloading anime fansubs…..im already suffering alittle withdrawl from lack of animes……i dont see a choice that we can run frm it….so i guess its no more StrikerS and more GE……

  29. Chraen |

Article about it is out in today’s Straits Times. Guess it’s real and not some ploy to scare us.

  30. holybell84 |

I am surprised to read:’….. brings in DVD from Jap…..’ YA RIGHT, they just get the vid and put it in VCD. Their DVDs titles are like unchanged?

The article also pointed out that we are not buying due to poor quality and overpriceing, Mr Sing countered:’Perception Problem’…….

  31. Kouji |

It’s just the industry doing their best to help cover the asses of each other.

  32. Elydis |

It is a consipiracy to wipeout the otakus -_-

  33. tiny Red Man |

so its goodbye to anime then….T.T i shall miss it..next thing you know: Hamachi File Transfer Protocol: New Piracy method!!

  34. Mark |

Hmm.. well, since it seems pretty easy to catch you out using torrents and it has to be significantly more difficult/impossible to get you if you use Direct Downloads, I’d suggest http://www.anime-eden.com

It’s really up to date with most of the new ongoing animes and the database has tons of complete series’, as well as anime movies, manga and OSTs. Also, the download speed is good with two downloads at a time.

I reckon you should try it and get this blog going again~

  35. LoserEXE |

One question, how is DDL any safer?… I mean can’t they still track us?

  36. LoserEXE |

@tiny Red Man – WTF Hamachi File Transfer Protocol!? I don’t play lan often but I think I know what Hamachi is… Oh well sounds abit like BitTorrent though hahaha…

  37. tiny Red Man |

Loser:It’s nothing like BT. Hamachi just creates a LAN network over/thru the internet..I had tried connecting to other people’s sharing folder thru hamachi and it works like wonders. All we need is to configure out the settings nicely and get animes from people who are still able to download them and viola..And ddl shouldn’t be risked.

  38. Mark |

tiny Red Man: Direct downloads can only be tracked if your ISP is willing to give out your private information which I doubt they want to do as it would lose them customers if they were widely known to give it out freely. A hell of a lot of people do download illegally and I’m sure they’d rather go for any decent ISP than one they know they can’t trust.

But, with torrents, pretty much everyone can be seen if you just check the tracker.

That’s how it is to the best of my knowledge which is why I believe DDL to be a lot more secure. But, I’m no expert so w/e.

Tsubaki: If you’re really worried about being caught, why don’t you just download episodes at college and put them on some kind of external storage device?

  39. Mitsuki_Hayase |

I like the way you all assume that Odex doesn’t trawl/read the anibloggers’ websites.

Now if I were the Odex CEO, and I were bent on catching those sneaky stingy little bastards trying to download anime illegally through other sources apart from BT at all costs, the first place I’d visit to get ideas would be…..

  40. Kouji |

Now they know how to use Winny and Share and DDLs. Good job for killing us all.

  41. fate |

Mr Sing said that unable to differentiate their products with the fansubs on a 42-inch tv..why does he not oso mention about their subtitles compared to fansubs!!!! only knows how to say gd things and not the bad things…

  42. arika |

what shall we do. wad is in the legal letter? wat action must be taken?

  43. dKiWi |

I am an anime fan currently serving my nation.

Overall, I feel that your article will have a positive effect on the anime scene in Singapore. It will shock those who do not know much about the fansubs they are downloading to abandon them and buy the stuff ODEX is selling….

  45. tiny Red Man |

    here’s some insider for you:
    1) So far, an estimated 10 to 20 person has received the letter of doom(I know the actual amount but not stating it to protect my client).
    2) Those who got the letter are to meet with Odex, or are asking them to meet them(Odex).
    3) Odex would like to settle the problem out of court.
    4) Most caught are likely to have downloaded Inuyasha, Naruto and Bleach.

  46. Yunlin |

Are they catching those DLing ODEX licensed anime or those DLing everything?

BTW, I’m totally boycotting ODEX products now. (And to think i used to spend some much on them. :x Going after DVD imports now…)
Cos the moment ODEX goes bankrupt, the animes under their name goes UNlicensed.
So… Let us look forward to the day that ODEX loses so much money that they go burst!
    Can’t wait! *Evil laughter* :p

  47. AnonSnake |

    Why everybody don’t like Odex.

I bought their Samurai Champloo DVD, just to see what everybody complaining.

The quality is ok, but the subs are Channel8-plain. No features also. But, considering my expectations for them, is already alright.

Just have massive room for improvement.

But they only have themselves to blame for such bad publicity among the anime fans. And really, they don’t market their goods at all. I had to browse through many stuff just to see a DVD I wanted. Somemore, quite expensive for just plain episodes with no extras.

But I guess everybody here already knows. I just want to have my 2 cents out xD

  48. LoserEXE |

Is it me or am I seeing more titles apearring on the shelf, then again, today was the first time I bothered or rather had all the time I wanted to browse trough all the Anime VCDs and DVDs at Blue Max and Po-Kim or something like that…

Either way, I still think we should all at least support ODEX, I somehow feel sorry for them, I mean maybe the reason behind their bad production and quality of the VCDs and DVDs are caused by the lack of funds and sales.

  49. Kouji |

They only have themselves to blame for that. No amount of sympathy can change this.

  50. 5parrowhawk |

Snake, it’s good that at least their DVDs are of ok quality. (Now, if they release StrikerS on DVD, THEN we’re talking!) The VCDs, however… I honestly can’t believe it when they claim that you can’t tell the diff between a VCD and a good-quality fansub on a 42-inch TV.

I still get quite fed up when they make claims like that, but at the same time, let me say this: Odex may be the lesser of two evils. If they go bankrupt, AVPAS is not likely to disappear. So it may be prudent to try and keep them afloat. Also, I do believe that we have to pay our dues, one way or another. R1, R2 or Odex – which is cheaper? You decide.

Let me put it this way. If you’re playing an RPG and reach the final boss. And the final boss has a BIG HUGE UNDEAD DRAGON floating behind him. And the dragon doesn’t do anything while you fight the boss. Do you think that killing the boss will let you win the game???

  51. Yunlin |

@Sparrowhawk: Sorry. Don’t play RPG, so don’t understand what you’re saying.

Anyway, what we really need is a fellow anime fan that’s working as a lawyer…
Then they can explain to us the legal boundaries of these so-called “illegal” downloading.

Know anyone? *Looks around with Puppy eyes*

  52. GGNotForever |

    Uguu~ No pain.

    Don’t worry ya ?

    We are with you.

  53. MisterX |

Wow.. thats bad. I guess you can always torrify Bittorrent client (and suffer bad speeds), or download from IRC.. in worst case, exchange some of the DVDs with other fans.. But wow. You know, I always complain about Czech Republic, but this is days when I am glad to be here – especially lawsuits agains piracy is pretty rare, and you can be sued only if you share something.. (so, if i will donwload only from ddl sites and xdcc, im all safe:)

Good luck to whole Singapore anime community. I WILL support you and other anime fans as much as I can via net (which means i will probably cant do much, but I will try)

  54. miyamiya |

Meh, I remember buying a Rurouni Kenshin Tsuiokuhen VCD in Singapore many years back. It had that stupid Censorship Board Sticker on it. All the slash scenes that depicted blood were CUT. I was like WTF?? Ever since, I never bought a single locally “produced” anime vcd ever again. Except for the HK imported vcds sold in the local comic shop *cough* that obviously did not go through censorship.

Now I buy R2 dvds. Good stuff. Cost an arm and a leg though.

  55. Yunlin |

You should see the tons of stuff that was edited out of the FEW animes that were being shown on local TV… :x

    Anyway, seriously…
    Is ODEX really that crazy???
They can’t have decided to license EVERYTHING?!?! O.o

  56. LoserEXE |

Not sure what to say about this tread but just read this http://www.gamersquare.com/forum/showthread.php?s=a36270cf80f0627d072dcae9bef10a69&t=59658&page=2

  57. Yunlin |

I love the user, Jankars. :p

“Hey, hey… I pay money every month for my cable connection so don’t say I never contribute hor? ”

    LOL!
    Hell ya! XP

  58. ub3r |

    Fsck, just plain fsck.

  59. Yunlin |

    Got this list off AVPAS…
    http://avpas.com.sg/AVPAS_Authorized.html

But… Why isn’t Naruto on the list too? O.o
    And DNAngel repeated twice???

  60. LoserEXE |

Hm… Just want to know, what’s happening now, I don’t really know AVPAS is still out there sending out letters… Oh well…

  61. hello! |

    Let’s see…

    AVPAS –

    Committee

    President Dr. Toh See Kiat

    ———

Conclusion: AVPAS is run by a bunch of self-serving, high handed scumbags. They probably know as much about anime as a diseased whore knows about the virtues of chastity.

You see, Singapore is run by money greedy fascists. The government is the corporate, and the corporate is the government. They pat each other’s backs. Lobbying for draconian intellectual property protection measures happens to be one of the many ways.

And copyright infringement is not theft:
    http://www.truthmapping.com/viewtopic.php?id=316

It came to be mistaken for theft because the media corporations insisted that ‘depriving of potential sales’ equals to ‘depriving of use’ as listed in Premise #3. That’s why they had been actively ‘educating’(re: brainwashing) young kids in schools, with the occasional tv airtime.

Me? I will still download anime. There have been animes that seemed to be good at first, but have a cliffhanger, rushed, major manga revisionist, anti-climatic ending in the last episode. Watching whole series before deciding to buy the DVDs is a wise practice. For people who know Japanese, it’s also a fun exercise to spot not so good translation work in fansubs.

  62. Rogie |

Well I feel with u guys. Lemme say, right now I’m just happy to live in Czech Republic, where things like these are really FAR from happening^_^

  63. Kevin |

You can still watch anime via stream. Downloading is a no no. But you cannot be charged from watching a streaming video as far as Singapore Law is concerned

  64. joshuasbones |

    *cough*www.stage6.com*cough*
    *cough*www.veoh.com*cough*

  65. Yunlin |

BTW, their VCDs are now going for $29.90 for 3 boxes…
It used to be $26.90 per box.
    But i’m not touching them.
Not unless they drop to $1 per disc!
Cos that’s just how little their things are worth. :P

  66. Anime Guru |

Yeah Kevin watching Anime online is not a crime. The problem is the uploaders, they do not have copyright ownership of the videos, so they are committing the “crime”. If the Anime company claims them then, they are removed.
